When talking with my fellow fashion bloggers, one topic always seems to come up: outfit photo locations. Putting together an outfit is just one aspect of the photo shoot. Finding the perfect location? That can be tough, especially if you’re looking to add variety to your fashion blog. Maybe you’re not a blogger and you just want to take a nice photo? There are a few locations that you can find almost anywhere that can make your picture really POP. I may not be the best source of information on this topic, but at least I can share what I’ve learned! Here are my tips…
Before we set out to take outfit photos, I always plan ahead. You definitely want to make sure that your outfits go with your setting. This is ESPECIALLY true when traveling. I look up popular Instagram spots in the area we’ll be visiting and plan my outfits accordingly. Also, if I ever see a cool location when I’m out and about I always make sure to snap a pic with my phone and make a note of where it’s located. Trust me… it helps.
Here are some top photo locations that you can find pretty much anywhere…
COLORED WALLS: Great for neutral outfits or when you want the color of your clothing to really “pop” against a backdrop.
BRICK WALLS: They give off a street-style vibe that goes great with edgier outfits. Take them straight on or at an angle.
GRAFFITI: It doesn’t necessarily have to be an entire wall of graffiti. Even little touches will work! I love how graffiti can add pops of color to your photo. One tip… prints can sometimes get lost when you’re taking a photo up against a graffiti wall. Not saying you can’t do it, it all just depends on the size of the print and how big the artwork is you’re posing in front of.
THE STREET: This is by far my favorite way to take outfit photos. You’re able to add movement in your shot, which is always nice (especially if you’re trying to show off fringe, flared pants or a billowy blouse).
SIDEWALKS: The same feel as a “street” photo, but without the added pressure of making sure cars aren’t going to hit you (because no photo is worth that). Sidewalk photos also allow you more time to get movement photos in other ways. Flip your hair, throw some flower petals, etc.
GARAGE DOORS: I actually use garage doors a lot when taking my #ootd shots on Instagram (@thenomisniche). A simple white backdrop makes your outfit stand out. Plus, it’s easy! Snap a photo on your way out the door for the day and you’re done.
STAIRS: Any staircase will do really. Don’t ask me why, but I actually get more likes on these types of pictures than any others. A photo of you sitting can also mix up your Instagram feed if you usually post pictures of you standing. Bonus points if you can find a gorgeous grand staircase. Extra bonus points if you wear a beautiful gown on said grand staircase 🙂
BONUS LOCATIONS (not found everywhere, but make for beautiful backdrops)
- Beaches
- Deserts
- Libraries
- Hotels
- Restaurants
- Carnivals
- Flower Gardens
I hope this post helped you out a little bit! I’ve never really done a “fashion blogger tips” type post, but I know that this is a subject that’s come up multiple times within my group of friends. Like I said, I’m no expert… but I thought I could at least share what I’ve learned. I’m all about helping some fellow gal-pals out. And if you have any tips… let me know!
Also, if you’d like to shop any of these looks, just hover over the SHOP tab at the top of my blog and click on INSTAGRAM.

Truth!!!
The graffiti walls are my fav, I’ve also used the libraries too haha
I’ve used the libraries as well (outside only). I’d like to take some photos inside if I can find the right lighting 🙂
These are good tips – and beautiful photos! I wish that my garage door was a little more photogenic…I just grab photos in the same spot on my way out the door each morning. Not very original but too hard trying different spots at the moments while the boys are small.
Hope you have a great weekend 🙂
