When I went platinum a little over a year ago, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know that my hair needed more TLC, and it started breaking off. Since then, I’ve had to get creative when it comes to making my hair look healthier and fuller. Here’s what I’ve learned…
Always use a heat protectant
This is something I almost never did, and my hair suffered. After trying quite a few products (probablly around seven), I finally found one that adds shine without weighing it down. I use It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin every single day. I’ll spray it on after towel-drying my hair and sometimes on dry hair if I need to restyle it.
Dry shampoo is your friend
Washing your hair and drying it everyday is a lot of work. It can also be rough on your hair. If your hair tends to get greasy, use some dry shampoo. I’ve been loving the scent of Herbal Essence Bio Renew Volume White Grapefruit & Mosa Mint Dry Shampoo. It smells great, adds volume, plus it’s paraben, gluten and colorant free. The One Love Organics Dry Shampoo Powder is also a great pick. Tap some on your scalp and massage it in.
Be open-minded about thickening solutions
Honestly, I thought “thickening fibers” were only for balding men. But, it actually helps you create the illusion of thicker hair as well. Fibolica is easy to use. Just shake the hair fibers onto the area that may be thinning. They bond to your existing hair and can create more density. It works in about 30 seconds! They have multiple colors to choose from as well.
Talk to your stylist about your cut
If you have long hair, long layers will definitely add volume. Personally, I like blunt cuts for shorter styles. When I chopped my hair off a few inches above my shoulder, I opted for one length. I didn’t want that “mom bob” or news anchor look, and a blunt cut kept it looking modern.
A healthy diet and vitamins works wonders
If your diet is weak, your hair will be too. I’m not a vegetarian, but I could easily be one. However, I did a little test to see if eating more protein would help. After three weeks of incorporating more fish, chicken and turkey into my meals, I definitely noticed a difference!
I’ve also tried a few different hair, skin and nails vitamin supplements over the past few months, and I think I’ve found the best duo. My favorite hair supplement is Sugar Bear Hair because 1) it works and 2) it tastes delicious! Honestly, you’re only supposed to take about two per day, but they taste so good sometimes I would pop more. (Not recommended, but I couldn’t help myself!) I also started taking Vitamin E every day. The combo worked for me, so hopefully that helps you out a little bit.
Become a back combing pro
This is an easy technique that adds major volume. It’s different than teasing, because you use a big-toothed comb. Don’t just use it at the top of your head, use it all over! Once you’ve achieved the volume you want, do a quick spray over. I use Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play. I also have a travel-size can that I take with me wherever I go.
Hopefully these tips helped you out a little bit. If you’d like to know about anything else hair-care related let me know! I also have a lot of advice for how to help your hair recover after going platinum. It’s been a process, I can tell you that!
Invest in some great extensions
When my hair started breaking off, it was extremely difficult to style my hair. I didn’t want to put heat on it, but without any kind of styling, it looked crazy! I bought some from Barefoot Blonde and love them. I had them cut so they weren’t so long. I really just wanted them for more volume, and a little extra length.
Hope these tips help! If you have any advice, I’d love to know.
Love, Lindsey
