Wine and chocolate together has been something wine connoisseurs have long debated. In my opinion, it’s totally doable if you have the right pairing. Here’s my guide to marrying two of my favorite things!
First, let’s talk about some easy guidelines. Chocolate can be very bold, rich, sweet, even acidic. If you don’t choose wisely, then you won’t be able to truly taste the wine after a few bites of chocolate. So, here are some things to keep in mind.
- The darker the chocolate, the darker the wine.
- The wine should be as sweet as the chocolate
- Opt for high quality (this is an indulgence!)
Now, to the pairings. I stopped by Godiva inside Fashion Show Las Vegas to snag some chocolates and taste test some of these pairings for myself. (Love my job!)
MILK CHOCOLATE goes best with PORT, SHERRY and PINOT NOIR.
DARK CHOCOLATE goes best with MERLOT, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, and CHIANTI
WHITE CHOCOLATE goes best with CHAMPAGNE, REISLING, and a FRUITY CHARDONNAY
CHOCOLATE COVERED NUTS go best with a TAWNY PORT and SHIRAZ
COFFEE/ESPRESSO CHOCOLATE goes best with SHIRAZ, PINOT NOIR, and OLOROSO SHERRY
SEA SALT CHOCOLATE goes best with PINOT NOIR, MERLOT, and OLOROSO SHERRY
Just an idea… instead of giving your sweetie a box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day, why not have an entire tasting with different chocolates and a variety of wine. You can see which ones you all like the best.
Love, Lindsey
