I’m so excited to finally share our living room with you! It’s taken us a few months to get it together, but I’m so happy with the results. It’s the place where we relax after a long day, entertain our friends, watch movie marathons and eat copious amounts of Chinese food. We wanted it to feel comfortable, but also showcase our personal style. Join me on the tour!
SHOP MY LOOK
Just to give you a glimpse of what we started with… NOTHING!
Actually, when we first moved in, the walls throughout the house were salmon pink. So, the first thing we did is have some painters come by and paint all the walls white. We thought it would look great with the dark hardwood floors.
Then… it was time to shop! We are very budget-conscious, but also wanted to get pieces that we’d love and enjoy for years to come. Our personal style is a mixture of mid-century modern, bohemian, and traditional. I know… all over the place! But, it is what it is and I like that this living room definitely has our thumbprint on it.
The first step was working from the ground up. Rugs are a must in our house since there’s hard wood floor throughout. I’m obsessed with this bohemian distressed rug by Safavieh. It comes in multiple colors, but we opted for the multicolored version. I thought it added some color and character to the living room.
Next up was the furniture. The first piece we bought was this Bastian Aniline Leather Sofa by Inspire Q Modern. It’s also on sale right now! I do want to forewarn you though… this couch takes time to break in. We bought it back in August and it’s just now starting to settle. Plus side, is leather couches get better with age, and we’ll have this one for years to come.
FURNITURE FAVORITES
We also fell in love with these Clay Adler Home Coal Creek map-print accent chairs. The travel theme added to the bohemian/global feel of the room – and they’re definitely roomy! I’ve been spending a lot of my blogging time in one of these chairs. I just prop my feet up on an ottoman and go to town. The blue ottoman was another MUST-HAVE. In fact… we searched for a long time trying to find one we liked. There are so many different shapes and sizes to choose from!
BLUE OTTOMAN OPTIONS
MOVING STORAGE BINS & FOOT STOOLS
It feels good to sit. It feels even better when you can sit somewhere and also prop your feet up.
THE GALLERY WALL
The gallery wall is our favorite part of the room. In includes a mixture of old pieces combined with some of my own personal artwork. We didn’t want to just purchase something to fill the space. We really wanted everything up on the wall to make us happy and help us feel inspired.
For instance, I made the “Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer” graphic, the love birds stringed together wooden piece, the 3D flower art, and I drew the elephant that you see framed on the right.
MORE PERSONAL TOUCHES
The sound wave on the far left is of our wedding song (“Can’t Help Falling in Love”).
The black and white photo is of a family member’s barn in Kentucky. The wooden frame is actually made from the barn in the photo.
Black and white “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign is from our first home/condo together.
Marilyn Monroe graphic is from my college home! (Love my 328 Aylesford girls!)
The Heinz photo is actually a framed card from my mom.
That horseshoe was really used in the Derby at Churchill Downs.
The brass goose symbolizes our love and loyalty to one another. Geese mate for life and will stay behind to bear the cold winter instead of flying south if their family is sick or injured. My grandpa told me he saw a gaggle of geese walking into the pond right before our wedding. From that point on we’ve called each other “My Goose”.
The “G” represents our last name. My mom and I bought it when she was out here helping us move in.
The giraffe is printed on a piece of dictionary paper. Giraffes symbolize being able to see the big picture while staying grounded. Mike and I both agree that being able to see the big picture and not getting worked up about the small things helps us stay in our “happy zone”.
PLANTS, PLANTS AND MORE PLANTS!
I told Mike I want our house to look like a jungle. He thought I was kidding. I wasn’t. We have plants in just about every corner of the house, and I’m in the process of hanging some from the ceiling in our dining room. I want our home filled with flowers and greenery for the simple fact that they make me happy.
One tip: I mix real plants with faux ones to keep everything budget-friendly.
These geometric hanging planter vases are actually from amazon and super affordable! The small ones come in a two pack, and the larger one is sold separately. I bought the cacti/succulents from Lowe’s.
INCLUDING HOUSEWARMING GIFTS INTO YOUR SPACE
All three of these pieces were housewarming gifts from friends 🙂 I also have a bottle of wine some friends brought by, and would like to make a vase out of it.
TINY BOOKSHELF
We have a lot of books, but still need to get a shelf for them all! So, in the meantime we’ve put them on a little ledge and included books that we feel our guests might want to flip through.
MUSIC CORNER
This record player was one of our first purchases. I was originally worried that we wouldn’t use it that much, but we ended up using it just about every day! It’s just taking us a little while to get our vinyl collection going. Funny story: the first time we had people over – all we had was the Chubby Checker Greatest Hits album, which we played on repeat the entire night. We must’ve heard “Let’s Do The Twist” about 30 times that night. Looking back, I’m not sure whey we didn’t just put the radio on.Â
LITTLE EXTRAS
From hanging tapestries to fun lamps, there are so many ways to add little extra touches to your living room. Here are some of the pieces we found and love…
PILLOWS AND BLANKETS
I don’t know why, but I always have to have a blanket on top of me when I’m on the couch. Even when it’s the middle of summer! We have our blue and tan ones draped over the furniture, but we also have a few hidden in our storage bins. Pillows are also a necessity. But, they have to pass the “Mike Test”. He has to feel them to make sure they’re comfy enough to buy. Ha!
Well, I think that’s about it! I hope you enjoyed looking through this post as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
By the way… would you want to see more home decor posts? I’ve heard a few of you would like to see the nursery. I’ll definitely post that too once it’s finished!
Love, Lindsey
