I thought I’d be one of those unicorn ladies that didn’t have to deal with postpartum hair loss. Guess what? I’m no unicorn and I too have found myself in the dreaded hairy situation (pun intended). Luckily, I caught it early enough that I’ve been able to combat it before letting things get out of control. Here’s what I’m doing to save my hair!
1. POSTPARTUM VITAMINS
The regular multivitamin I was using didn’t seem to be catering to what my body (and baby) needed. I switched to a postnatal vitamin and I feel like it’s definitely helped. New mamas need extra nutrients. It’s important to keep your blood sugar, ferritin, zinc, Vitamin D and iron levels normal. It also doesn’t hurt that my vitamin includes fenugreek which has been known to help promote healthy breastfeeding.
2. PROTEIN
Protein is a great way to help your hair grow. I’m not a vegetarian, but I don’t really eat a lot of meat. That means I need to pay extra attention to adding protein in other ways. In addition to eggs and beans, I also started munching on low-sugar protein bars to make sure I’m getting enough.
3. THIQUE HAIR PRODUCTS
I mean… the name really says it all. In addition to taking my vitamins and watching my diet, I started using THIQUE hair products as another way to help bring some life back into my hair. They have a variety of different products, but I personally love the shampoo, conditioner and serum. I’m always switching up my shampoo and conditioner, so I thought why not try something that could help with this annoying hair loss deal I’ve got going on.
There are a couple of different hair loss solutions on the market, which meant I had to do some research. I chose THIQUE because it features natural plant extracts, is hypoallergenic, sulfate free, paraben free, gluten free and vegan. It’s also safe for color-treated hair, which is great because – SPOILER ALERT – I’m not a natural blonde. Each product only costs around $20, so it won’t break the bank either.
Here’s what I’m using:
Gentle Volumizing Shampoo: The smell is so nice! It reminds me of a shampoo they used at the salon I went to when I was younger. It smells very clean and I can definitely smell the peppermint oil that’s in it. While I don’t believe that shampoo can make your hair grow faster, the right shampoo can help prep my scalp for new hair growth and protect the fragile hair I already have. This shampoo made my hair extremely thick after just one wash. I was impressed! I didn’t have to tease or use hair spray!
Lightweight Nourishing Conditioner: I used a ton of this product and it still didn’t weigh my hair down like most conditioners tend to do. It coated my hair without making it greasy, and I feel like it protects from any heat I may have to use for styling.
Scalp Serum: I use the THIQUE scalp serum on dry hair before bed and go heavy on the areas that I notice the most thinning. It’s designed to exfoliate your scalp and it has natural caffein extracts which have been shown to create thicker, fuller looking hair diameter, stimulate hair shaft and promote hair growth. I really massage it in there!
4. SLEEP STYLES
I can’t sleep with my hair down because it gets all sweaty at the nape of my neck. Also, having hair in my face during those late night/early morning feedings was getting to be really annoying. My regular elastic hair ties were causing more breakage to my already fragile hair, so I switched them out for satin scrunchies. Bonus: They don’t crease your hair like regular elastics do so you don’t have to style it again in the morning with heat tools. I either wear my hair in a high bun or in a braid and it looks pretty decent in the morning!
5. CAREFUL WHEN WET
I purchased a special brush designed to use on wet hair. It doesn’t yank my hair out like other brushes do. In fact, I rarely have to clean the hair out of it, so I know it’s working! It’s very gentle, so I have to spend more time brushing but it’s worth it!
I hope these tips help you! I know postpartum hair loss can be a pain. In addition to your crazy hormones, late night feedings and the stress of taking care of a tiny human, it’s just one more thing that Mother Nature has thrown into the crazy mom-life mix. Hang in there mama! After all, our babies are worth it 😉
Love, Lindsey
